Free entry. The Royal Observatory Housed on the Meridian line, Greenwich the observatory's permanent collection covers the history of astronomy. Free entry. The Science Museum With over 300,000 objects in its care the museum covers the entire history of western science, technology and medicine. It has been uniquely placed to acquire objects recording the Industrial Revolution, and now holds unrivalled collections in this area. The Sherlock Holmes Museum According to the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes and Doctor Watson lived in a Victorian lodging house at 221b Baker Street between 1881-1904. The house, built in 1815 and listed by the Government to protect its architectural and cultural heritage, houses museum dedicated to the life and times of Sherlock Holmes. The interior has been faithfully maintained for posterity exactly as described in the published stories. Tate Britain The national gallery of British art from 1500 to 2005. Free entry. The V&A (Victoria and Albert) Museum The world's greatest museum of art and design, with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity. Also a working archaeology unit, the centre provides a fascinating insight into the lives of some of the city's most remarkable past residents; it even gives visitors the opportunity to handle artefacts which are 1,000 or even 2,000 years old! The National Motor Museum Based in Beaulieu, Hampshire, the museum's collection comprises some 250 vehicles - from some of the earliest examples of motoring to legendary World Record Breakers like Bluebird and Golden Arrow. The National Museum of Photography, Film & Television Based in Bradford, West Yorkshire, this award-winning museum is home to 10 free galleries, 2 cinemas and an IMAX theatre. The National Railway Museum Based in York, the museum's collection of 103 locomotives and 177 other items of rolling stock, tells the railway story from the Rocket to Eurostar. Whipsnade Wild Animal Park Set in 600 acres of beautiful parkland on the Chiltern Hills, north of London, the Park, one of Europe's largest wildlife conservation parks, is home to more than 2,500 animals, many of which are endangered in the wild. |
